Muslim Community in Quebec expresses its concern over the Canadian government’s halt of funding to UNRWA

The Quebec Muslim Community Consultative Table (QMCCT) sent a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canadian Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussein, and Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie regarding the recent position taken by the Canadian government to stop funding the United Nations Relief and Works Organization for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Here is is what letter said :
Based on the principle of citizenry, true Canadian values,  human rights and rights of children for life. From a humanitarian standpoint, away from political polarization, We, The Quebec Muslim Community Consultative Table (QMCCT),  are writing to express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the recent decision by the Canadian government to halt humanitarian funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This decision undermines the crucial work that UNRWA does to provide essential services and support to vulnerable Palestinian refugees.

The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the region demands a collective effort to alleviate suffering and promote stability. Cutting funding to UNRWA not only jeopardizes the well-being of countless individuals who rely on its services but also risks exacerbating tensions in an already volatile region. It is disheartening to witness political considerations taking precedence over the welfare of those who are most in need.

We urge the government to reconsider this decision and prioritize the humanitarian imperative of assisting refugees. Now, more than ever, international cooperation and support are essential to address the complex challenges faced by displaced populations. Failing to uphold commitments to UNRWA jeopardizes the principles of compassion and solidarity that should guide our global community.

We implore the Canadian government to demonstrate leadership by reinstating funding to UNRWA, thereby reaffirming its commitment to the well-being of vulnerable populations and promoting a more stable and just world.
